What you’ll learn

  • Overcome common fears in public speaking
  • Elevate confidence when starting conversations
  • Good habits when preparing for presentations

overview

Just dive in!

That's my motto. Or, well, maybe my new motto. I've been teaching classes at the University of Manitoba for over two years in the Extended Education department. There's one common theme that I've seen - the fear of public speaking and thinking that you'll be saying the "wrong" things in conversation. My response to these feelings have always been the same - you just gotta dive in!

Learning a new language can be tough, especially with the nuances that English has. The more opportunities you find to practice natural conversations, the easier it is to speak. In this 90 minute session, you'll learn about good habits in effective presentations and in natural conversations, and you get to meet others with similar goals

It was an entertaining class, a truly inclusive experience where I could meet people from different countries all around the world, it was fun, helped me to gain confidence in myself and improve my abilities when talking to others, I feel that it will be a big improvement in my personal and working life. I recommend it to those people that want to improve their communication skills.

It was excellent! I don´t have the opportunity to practice my English very often and I love it also because I talked to people from all around the world.

The class lead by Chris Hoquis was very exciting and kept us motivated through all of it. The ludic activities and group dynamics helped us to get to know each other while practicing ways to improve our public speaking. In the end of it, we were told to creat a compelling story on how we got stranded on an island, each of one of the group had to tell a part of it in a way that sounded smooth. Such an inspiring way to know some tricks on verbal communication.

Amazing class. The only way to improve your public speaking is to practice, and by attending this class you will get lots of that. Chris provided helpful constructive feedback and informed me of tendencies I didn't even know I had. Now that I'm aware of them I can focus on minimizing them in the future. Great quick class and time flies when you are in it!

Good dynamic with the other students, it doesn't feel like a class and you feel the encouragement from each assistant, where you can improve your skills in a respectful and collaborative environment.
